Jack wasn't the first he had lost by any means. Sometimes the time wasn't right, or they didn't bite the way he expected. Jack had been too young and too angry and their time together had been too short for Emil to make the progress he would have needed to really reel him in.
And so, when the first news of the Horsemen had hit, his first thought had been that someone had actually beat him to it. At first glance, there was nothing that said a deal had been struck, but Emil had been in the game long enough that he could practically see this one in neon lettering.
When everything was finished and Jack was allegedly dead, he was curious enough to check in on some things. When that came back with the expected results - that Jack was as alive as he had been at the beginning of the shows - he had carefully and quietly set up another sigil and waited to see what came back.
